Presented is an 1898 calling card from former United States President Grover Cleveland, legally named Stephen Grover Cleveland. Born in 1937 in Caldwell, New Jersey, Cleveland was both the 22nd and 24th President of the United States. He was the first U.S. President to serve two non-consecutive terms, serving as President from 1885-89 and from 1893-97. In his first presidential term, Cleveland, a Democrat, signed the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887, which made railroads subject to federal regulation by a regulatory agency. In his initial term, Cleveland also signed the Dawes Act, which made Native American land held communally subject to division individually and had the effect of having Native Americans lose two-thirds of their land between 1887-1935. In his second term, Cleveland intervened in the 1894 Pullman Strike in order to keep the railroads running. In his retirement, Cleveland lived in Princeton, New Jersey, and for a time he was a trustee of Princeton University. He passed away in 1908.

The offered Grover Cleveland calling card measures approx. 3.2x1.5". It is part of a framed 6.2x8.2" display, with a display stand on back. The display features a paper or card stock "plaque" on top, on which is machine printed, "GROVER CLEVELAND/22ND AND 26TH U.S. PRESIDENT/1885-1889 1893-1897/ONLY U.S. PRESIDENT [at that time] TO SERVE 2 NON CONSECUTIVE [sic] TERMS." Beneath the above "plaque" is an oval photo of Cleveland, approx. 2.3" in height. Under the photo is machine printed "Grover Cleveland." At the bottom of the display is the aforementioned calling card. In black fountain ink, Cleveland neatly signed and inscribed the following: "Grover Cleveland/Jan 17, 1898." Although faded in color, the signature and inscription are clearly penned. Overall, except for the expected fading of the color of ink in 127 years, the offering is in EXCELLENT condition. The offering comes with a PSA/DNA LOA for the signature (Cert: TO7111).
