Rare program issued for the Yale vs. Princeton "Thanksgiving Day" football game held at the Polo Grounds in New York City on November 30, 1893. The Yale/Princeton rivalry is one of the oldest in collegiate sports. During the nineteenth century each school's football team was among the best in the nation, which added even greater significance to the outcome of their annual game. The 1893 game was no exception, as a crowd of over 40,000 (the largest ever to see a football game at the time) turned out to see the two undefeated clubs battle for gridiron supremacy. The game lived up to expectations, as Princeton capped off its undefeated season by shutting out Yale 6-0. The uniquely designed program, which is in the shape of a football (complete with leather laces for the binding) is substantial for the time, consisting of 124 pages. Included are team photos of each club, plus Harvard, as well as individual photos of each team's caption, including Frank Hinkey of Yale. Also featured are team photos of the schools' respective baseball and crew teams, as well as many photos of each campus. The program (11x7.5"), which has not been scored, displays light wear to the leather covers. A few pages display light foxing and/or tiny stains, but the overwhelming majority remain clean and bright. Excellent condition overall and an outstanding example from one of the most memorable games ever played between the two schools.
