Collection of sixty-five Jessie Haines signed personal checks spanning the years 1967 to 1971. Each check, drawn on the Winters National Bank and Trust Co. of Dayton, Ohio, bears the preprinted names of Haines and his wife Carrie along the top left border. Haines has signed each check "Jesse J. Haines" in blue ink along the base, with the signatures averaging 8-9/10. The number of checks by year is as follows: 1967 (23), 1969 (34), 1970 (5), and 1971 (3). Twelve of the 1967 checks display bank cancellation holes and stamps, while all the remaining checks display bank cancellation stamps (some of which touch upon Haines' signature). The checks (6x2.75") are in Excellent condition overall, with several displaying one or more vertical folds. Haines was one of the game's top pitchers during the 1920s, winning 20 or more games three times during the decade. Haines spent eighteen of his nineteen seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he helped lead the club to three World Championships. He retired in 1937 with 210 wins and a 3.64 lifetime ERA. Haines was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970, eight years before his death.
