Presented is the opportunity to possess an extremely rare, circa 1903, Nap Lajoie Wright & Ditson "double knob" bat. Hall of Fame second baseman Napoleon Lajoie played in the Major Leagues from 1896-1916: Philadelphia Phillies (1896-1900), Philadelphia Athletics (1901-02 & 1915-16), Cleveland Bronchos/Naps (1902-14). He won five batting titles, with a career best .426 for the Philadelphia Athletics in the AL in 1901, when he won the new league's Triple Crown. He had a lifetime batting average of .339, with 3,252 hits. Lajoie was so popular as a player, and sometimes player-manager, that for a time the Cleveland AL franchise was nicknamed "Naps" in his honor. Lajoie, a right-handed hitter, liked to choke up on his bat, and he used a "double knobbed" bat so that he could choke up about two inches and still have a knob, the higher one, right below the pinky finger of his lower left hand, thus adding to his bat control.
The offered bat has a length of 34" and a weight of 38.5 ounces. Etched on the barrel: "Wright & Ditson/MAJOR LEAGUE/LAJOIE" is etched on the barrel. The "WRIGHT & DITSON" stamp on the bottom of the lower knob is light, and this lower knob also has a small piece of wood, of about 0.3", chipped off. The bat has a slight crack, repaired, in the handle. The bat has a wonderful, vintage, Dead Ball Era look. It exhibits great use, with various chips, ball marks, and indentations.
