The 1928 New York Yankees continued the Bronx Bomber dominance of the American League in the 1920s as they had a 101-53 regular season record to take the pennant and then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Presented is a '28 Yankee Type I team photo, with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. In the top row, Ruth is the fifth player from the right and next to the Bambino is Lou Gehrig, fifth from the left. Ruth led the Major Leagues with 54 home runs in '28, batted .323, and tied with Gehrig for the most AL RBIs that season, with 142. In '28, Gehrig hit 27 home runs while batting .374. In addition to Hall of Famers Ruth and Gehrig, other Yankee Hall of Famers in the photo include Manager Miller Huggins, fifth from left, Tony Lazzeri, Bill Dickey, Waite Hoyt (with a '28 season 23-7 won/lost mark), Earle Combs, and Leo Durocher.
The offered photo measures 7.5x9.5". It shows the Yankees posing in front of the grandstand at Yankee Stadium. The original News Service photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified "TYPE 1 AUTHENTIC" (85509117). On back is stamped "International News Photo." Also, on back, an unknown hand has marked, in pencil, "1-7 1/2x9 1/2." At the top center of the photo is an approx. one-inch tear that has been mended on the back with clear tape. There is also a hardly noticeable crease in the top right section. Aside from the aforementioned imperfections, the photo is in nice condition and makes a fine remembrance for the 1928 New York Yankees World Champions, with immortal sluggers Ruth and Gehrig.
