Displayed is a late 1940s-early 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers team-signed miniature baseball, with Hall of Famer Gil Hodges and stars Don Newcombe, Billy Cox, Carl Erskine, Preacher Roe, and Carl Furillo. Also, manager Burt Shotton, Dan Bankhead (the first African American pitcher in modern baseball), Bruce Edwards, Bobby Morgan, and Joe Hatton. There are 25 signatures in all, but many of the signatures are illegible because of the darkening of the ball and the small, cramped penmanship required of signing a ball with a diameter of only slightly over two inches. Shotton and Bankhead signed on the sweet spot. The Jackie Robinson "signature" on the ball is not authentic, as it is traced.
The offered miniature ball has a Spalding manufacturer's stamp. Small parts of the "skin" of the ball are missing. The signatures are in blue or black ink. The offering makes an unusual collectible, with numerous vintage Brooklyn Dodger signatures.
