Presented is a "brand new" World Football League (WFL) football, circa 1974. The WFL began play in 1974 with 12 teams. Birmingham Americans, Chicago Fire, Detroit Wheels, Florida Blazers, The (Honolulu) Hawaiians, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Sharks, Memphis Southmen, New York Stars, Philadelphia Bell, Portland Storm, and Southern California Sun. The WFL lasted from 1974 until partway through the 1975 season. The WFL did sign many NFL players: Larry Csonka, a fullback, halfback Jim Kiick and wide receiver Paul Warfield from the Miami Dolphins; Kenny Stabler and Daryle Lamonica, quarterbacks from the Oakland Raiders; Calvin Hill, a running back and Craig Morton, a quarterback, from the Dallas Cowboys. However, some of those WFL signed players were signed to futures contracts, some of which weren't slated to start until 1976, when the WFL had already folded. The league was beset with severe financial problems. The Birmingham Americans won the WFL's first and only championship in '74, but after the season the team's equipment was confiscated because of unpaid bills. The WFL folded partway through the '75 season, and no WFL teams were absorbed into the NFL.

The offered WFL football appears unused. It is approx. 12 inches long. Both main panels read, "WILSON." One of these panels also reads, "Official World League." The ball has white laces. This ball is the traditional brown color for a football. During WFL games in 1974, a gold (yellow) football with orange stripes was used. Perhaps this football was a later model, more traditional football that was like those used by the WFL after the league switched back to more traditionally-colored footballs. The ball is a little soft and weighs 14 ounces. It is in EXCELLENT condition.
