Displayed is a ticket stub from the Oct. 6, 1926, World Series Game 4 at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, the game that has come to be known as "The Johnny Sylvester Game." In the summer of 1926, 11-year-old Johnny Sylvester was horseback riding at a vacation home in Bay Head, New Jersey, when he was accidentally kicked in the head by his horse. The kick led to osteomyelitis in his skull, a serious and thought to be life-threatening condition, and Johnny or a member of his family wrote to Babe Ruth in care of the Yankees, and the Yankees sent urgent telegrams to Ruth in St. Louis, getting ready to play the St. Louis Cardinals in the '26 World Series. Ruth sent Johnny two team-autographed baseballs, one from the Yankees and one from the Cardinals. Ruth also wrote to Johnny, saying, "I'll knock a homer for you Wednesday" (Game 4). Ruth did even more than he promised: He smashed three home runs that day, with the third blast flying out of Sportsman's Park entirely and breaking the plate glass window of an automobile dealership across the street from Sportsman's Park. The incident was later dramatized, somewhat fictionalized, and changed to the 1934 World Series, in the film The Babe Ruth Story.

The offered ticket stub measures 2x4.3". It reads, in part, "World's Championship Games/1926/SPORTSMAN'S PARK St. LOUIS/National League vs. American League/Sec. XX/ROW 26/SEAT 8"/GAME 4." The ticket stub shows some minor darkening from the passage of time. The stub has been encapsulated and PSA graded "Good 2." The Yankees won Game 4 by a 10-5 score, and Johnny Sylvester eventually recovered from his illness. The Bronx Bombers went on to lose the World Series in seven games, but the "Johnny Sylvester Game," with Babe Ruth tripling the number of home runs he promised Johnny, remains one of baseball's most endearing moments, and a ticket stub from that game adds great charm and warmth to any sports collection.
