Presented is a circa 1904 Spalding Model B4 bat. Typical of this Model B4 bat is the thick handle and the thick lower barrel. Etched onto the trademark area of the dark wood is simply, "SPALDING B4." There is approx. five inches of black tape that begins about 3.25" above the knob and covers the area where a batter using Ty Cobb's style might start his grip, with hands held about four inches apart, and then often, as the pitcher was just about to deliver, raise the lower hand for a choked grip for bat control, or lower the upper hand for a power swing. The handle areas without tape are lighter in shade than the areas of the barrel, meaning that tape may have been used on various parts of the handle over time, leaving the untaped areas now lighter than the barrel areas that were always exposed to the sun. The bat has some dead wood on the barrel. The upper knob has a small flat spot were some wood is missing. The bottom of the knob shows "SPALDING Trade Mark" etched into a circle.

The bat is 33.2" long, and it weighs 40.1 ounces, not particularly heavy for bats of that Deadball Era. The offering exhibits great use, with many ball marks. The bat makes a fine remembrance for the place hitters who excelled during the Deadball Era.
