Displayed is a May 30, 1977, game used Dennis Eckersley signed and inscribed baseball from the no-hitter thrown by the Cleveland Indians right-hander. Known as "Eck," the Hall of Famer was both a starter and a reliever in his Major League career: Cleveland Indians (1975-77), Boston Red Sox (1978-84 & '98), Chicago Cubs (1984-86), Oakland Athletics (1987-95), St. Louis Cardinals (1996-97). He is the first Major League pitcher to have both a 20-win season and a 50-save season. The 6-time All-Star was a World Champion with the 1989 Oakland Athletics and the AL MVP in '92. In his no-hitter at Cleveland Stadium, Eckersley defeated the California Angels, 1-0, allowing only Tony Solaita a walk and Bobby Bonds to reach first base on a wild pitch strikeout. Eckersley was a 2-time MLB saves leader. He had a lifetime record of 197-171, with an ERA of 3.50 and 390 saves.
The offered signed ball is an Official American League Ball (MacPhail). Inscribed on a panel in blue ballpoint ink by an unknown hand, "No hitter by Eck - Fosse/Monday [May] 30 - 77 1-0 vs Angels." Eckersley, using blue ballpoint ink, neatly signed a bold signature on this same side panel. The ball exhibits great use. It has stains, possibly dirt... A foreign substance? The ball has an affixed James Spence authentication sticker (RR72061).
