The official painting from one of the biggest fights ever held. Oil-on-masonite for this highly touted 1982 Caesar’s Palace extravaganza. Pitting the Easton Assassin with the deadly jab versus the unbeaten 6’5” white man with frightening punching power, Gerry Cooney. Highly textured and gratefully colorful work shows the two fighters above the dreamy decadence of Las Vegas with the Caesar’s fountains seductively spraying the waters of greed. This important work was the official painting for the fight and its artwork was used for the program, posters, tickets and everything else that carried its trademark. The still devastating 33-year old Holmes stopped an outclassed Cooney in the 13th round. Like new condition in its original frame the painting itself is 22x25” and overall 30x32”. Signed in the picture and also inscribed on the verso to the buyer and dated 1983. Comes with the official fight poster (framed 29x23”) and inscribed to the buyer (1984). All is mint. Purchased directly from Neiman, this is one of the few “official” works extant. Less come up for public sale.
