John McGraw was the colorful and cantankerous manager of the New York Giants from 1902-32. Before that, the Hall of Famer was a star third baseman with the Baltimore Orioles, a team famous for the players executing "inside baseball," using then-innovative tactics such as the hit-and-run, squeeze play, cut-offs, etc. McGraw's Giants won 10 National Pennants and three World Series. As a manager, McGraw was ejected from a ball game 118 times, the MLB record until it was broken by manager Bobby Cox in 2007. McGraw drove his players hard, and he would chastise players right on the field. His Deadball Era strategies were usually far ahead of the opposing team's manager. Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack, himself a managerial legend, said of McGraw: "There has been only one manager - and his name is McGraw."
