Presented is a trio of Oscar Berger items. Berger was a cartoonist/caricaturist who was born in Presnov, Czechoslovakia, in 1901. He was a cartoonist working for Germany's biggest newspaper when his cartoons upset Adolf Hitler, and Berger was forced to leave the country, later going to Budapest, Hungary, and then to Paris, France, and then to London, England, where he worked for the London Daily Eagle newspaper. He moved to the United States in 1955 and worked for Life MagazineThe New York Times, and The New York Herald Tribune. He also did drawings for theaters and numerous companies. He was so respected as a cartoonist that many famous personages actually sat for him, posing for their cartoon illustrations. These celebrities included: Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin, Marlena Dietrick, Pavlova, and many more.

The three items in the offering: 1) A Berger cartoon of author H.G. Wells. Drawing on paper or thin card stock, Berger used pencil to create a minimalist cartoon of Wells. As a possible tip-of-the-hat to the science fiction, outer space fiction of Wells, Berger depicted Wells as a man-in-the moon, showing the mustache and bushy eyebrows of the author. Berger signed the cartoon in pencil. Wells signed and inscribed the cartoon, also in pencil. Wells inscribed "Seen & [not legible]." There are tears of a length of approx. one inch in each of the top corners, a fold line near the bottom, and some light creasing. The offering has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as "AUTHENTIC AUTO." 2) A 1948 Oscar Berger signed typed letter on Oscar Berger letterhead and written to the principal of a school in El Paso, Texas. In the one-page letter, Berger references an earlier letter sent by the school principal, and he writes that he is enclosing an autographed photo of himself (not included), and he also plugs his new book. Berger signs the letter in neatly scripted, bold blue ink. At the top of the letter is typed "New York, January 5, 1948." The letter, measuring approx. 6.8x9", has an uneven top from where it was apparently trimmed, and the letter has a few small stains and three light fold lines from when it was folded for mailing. The letter exhibits some slight darkening from the passage of time. The letter has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as "AUTHENTIC AUTO." 3) A signed black & white photo of Berger. Although it is not conclusive, this photo may have been the signed photo mentioned in the aforementioned Berger letter to the school principal. The photo measures 5.1x7". It depicts Berger in profile, attired in a dress jacket, with a bow tie. The photo has some very slight darkening, but it is in overall EXCELLENT condition. On back is "Caricaturist Oscar Berger," written in blue ink by an unknown hand. The offering has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as "AUTHENTIC AUTO."
