Displayed is a 1979 Hank Aaron bronze sculpture by artist Tom Holland, a work that commemorates the 700th home run by the Hall of Famer. Known as "Hammerin' Hank," Aaron grew up in Alabama. He was initially a cross-handed batter, and he played at a high level in Negro baseball with the Indianapolis Clowns. He made the Major Leagues with the Milwaukee Braves in 1954 and played with the Braves in Milwaukee and then Atlanta, through the 1974 season. He finished his playing career with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1975-76. Aaron hit his 700th home run on July 21, 1973, at Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium. Against left-hander Ken Brett of the Philadelphia Phillies, Aaron hit a low-and-inside fastball into the left field seats to become at that time, along with Babe Ruth, one of only two players in MLB history to have hit at least 700 round trippers. Aaron ended the '73 season trailing Ruth's 714 mark by only one home run. Hank broke Ruth's record on April 8, 1974, when he homered at Atlanta off the Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Al Downing. Barry Bonds, with 762 home runs, now holds the lifetime record for home runs, but because of allegations of steroid use against Bonds, many baseball fans and pundits consider Aaron to be "The People's Home Run King."
Including its base, the statue is approx. 12.8" in length, and counting its 1.25" base, the statue is approx. 16" high. On the base, a plaque, measuring 1x5.3", reads, "Hank Aaron HR# 100/DATE 7-21-73/PLACE PHILADELPHIA/PITCHER BRETT/SCULPTOR: THOMAS HOLLAND." The artist has scored his name on the "ground" of the sculpture and Hank Aaron's name is also scored on the ground of the sculpture. The artist's skill makes the musculature of Aaron's arms and legs almost come to life as the sculpture shows Aaron in a beautiful follow through. The sculpture weighs 16 lbs. The offering shows some tiny wear on the plaque, but the work is in overall EXCELLENT condition.
