Presented is a one-page, typed letter, dated June 2, 1942, signed by Babe Ruth. In his letter, written on "Samuel Goldwyn Inc., Ltd." [New York Office] letterhead, Ruth responds to a Miss Leonore Knight, a fan who had written him with questions about his career. In part, Ruth replied: "Your very welcome letter written during my recent illness in Hollywood has just reached me here with other messages equally kind.... There are so many questions in the letters and references to "certain home-runs" and other incidents of bygone days, that I wish I could answer each person separately. Mighty sorry I'm not the letter-writing kind of fellow so I hope you will accept this short note of thanks. I enjoyed working in the motion picture 'The Pride of the Yankees' and hope you will enjoy seeing the picture sometime in July." Ruth has boldly signed the letter in blue fountain pen, with a 9/10 signature. As noted by the location above the date ("New York"), Ruth had just returned home after appearing in "The Pride of the Yankees," which was the story of Lou Gehrig's life. Ruth played himself in the movie and he received good reviews for his acting, as he was quite natural in front of the camera, having appeared in films before. This is one of the few pieces of correspondence we have seen in which Ruth discusses the film, and since the Ruth letter is written on Samuel Goldwyn letterhead, the Ruth correspondence becomes all the more appealing. The letter (8.5x10.9") displays two horizontal folds (one of which runs through the Ruth signature), some light stains, and a light crease. Overall, the letter is in EXCELLENT condition. The offering comes with a typed, opened envelope in which the letter was mailed. The envelope measures 4.1x approx. 9", torn at the end when opened. The envelope has a machine-printed return address of Samuel Goldwyn Inc. in Los Angeles, and a New York Postmark dated July 7, 1942. The envelope has a typed name of the addressee as "Miss Leonore Knight" and a Los Angeles address. Written on the front in pencil by an unknown hand: "Personal letter from Babe Ruth." The letter exhibits some darkening, a few partial tears in addition to the tear where it was opened, and some light stains. The offering comes with a PSA LOA for the Ruth signature.
