Commemorative plaque, issued by the local Pittsburgh sportswriters and broadcasters, honoring Hall of Fame forward/center Connie Hawkins for being named the first MVP of the American Basketball Association (ABA). The plaque features a large photo of Hawkins as a member of the Pittsburgh Pipers, to the left of which is the ABA logo. The printed lettering reads in full: Connie Hawkins/Pittsburgh Pipers/Captain 1967-68/American Basketball Association's/Most Valuable Player/This plaque awarded to/Connie Hawkins/Pittsburgh's 'Do Everything' Player/By/Sportswriters and Broadcasters/For/his remarkable play in helping the/Pipers win the A.B.A. Championship/during the league's first season - /1967-68." A rare and significant ABA award dating from the league's inaugural season issued to one of the greatest players of his era. The metallic component (11.25x9.25") of the plaque displays a few light scratches and tiny dings. The wood mount (13x11") displays a few moderate abrasions.
