Horseshoe worn by Happy Issue while winning the prestigious Hollywood Gold Cup at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California, on December 17, 1944. This was a historic win for Happy Issue. Not only did she become the first female horse to win the Hollywood Gold Cup (only two others have done it since), but she did it by breaking the track record for a mile and a quarter on dirt by posting a winning time of 2:01 3/5. That win is commemorated here with this rare piece: a sterling silver ashtray that incorporates the horseshoe as part of the design. The horseshoe has been mounted upon the edges of the oval ashtray. The engraving on the interior base of the ashtray reads "Worn By Happy Issue Winner of The Hollywood Gold Cup (1 M 8 1/4) And 2:01 3/5 New Track Record Ridden By H. Woodhouse." Stamped "Sterling" on the reverse. The horseshoe, which displays moderate oxidation, has partially separated from the ashtray on the left, but it remains firmly attached along the right side. The ashtray (4.5x5.5x1") displays moderate tarnishing throughout.
