Presented is the opportunity to obtain vivid, rare, 1962-63 H.M. Cowan Screenart NHL ceramic hockey tiles (4). These tiles were originally formed in England and then finished in Hamilton, Ontario, and they were meant to be sold at NHL arenas. Because the artist, H.M. Cowan, had not obtained prior licensing rights, the tiles were supposed to be destroyed, and most were intentionally obliterated. But some survived, and there are even complete sets of the 105 different players. In 1962-63, the NHL had only six teams, with about 16 skaters and one goalie on each team, so the 105 players in the Screenart set comprised essentially the entire NHL. Each tile measures 6x6", with a thickness of 0.25". The front has a colorful player image, the player's name, and "H.M. Cowan." The tiles have a cork backing with a hook for hanging. Stamped on back, "SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD/Made in Canada." 1) Jean Beliveau, Hall of Fame Montreal Canadiens center; 2) Henri Richard, Hall of Fame Montreal Canadiens center; 3) Howie Young, Detroit Red Wings defenseman; 4) Gump Worsley, Hall of Fame New York Rangers goalie. The tiles are in very nice condition; only the Henri Richard tile has a light scratch/crack on the surface. These scarce tiles are a great find for hockey collectors.
