Cabinet photo capturing legendary female sharpshooter Annie Oakley in a formal studio pose. The image pictures Oakley holding her rifle, with a pair of six shooters at her feet in the bottom right. Oakley's numerous marksmanship medals adorn the front of her shirt. A stamped facsimile signature of Oakley is printed at the base of the mount. Located below that, in red lettering, is the photographer's credit stamp: "Brisbois" of Chicago.
This is one of Oakley's most popular cabinet photos and one of two taken at the Brisbois studio on that day (the other is a closeup image). We have seen another example of this cabinet photo with handwritten notations on the reverse indicating that it was obtained at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and we can only assume that Oakley posed for the photo at that time. Oakley was at the height of her career in 1893, having starred for many years in the famed Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. A headliner in shows both at home and abroad, she is widely considered to be the most famous female celebrity of the nineteenth century.
The cabinet (4.25x6") displays a thin strip of tape along the top border (covers a small portion of the photo) and both adhesive residue and minor surface paper loss along the base of the mount where another strip of tape was removed. There is also evidence of a small piece of tape having been removed from the reverse. The photo itself displays outstanding clarity and remains in Near Mint condition.
