Large oil on canvas painting, by noted baseball artist Andy Jurinko, capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn as a member of the Boston Braves. Signed and dated ("95") by the artist on the reverse canvas. Spahn is pictured in mid-windup on the mound and the image is notable for the fact that Jurinko has made Spahn the sole focus of the piece, with no extraneous details.
If someone were planning on sculpting a "Mount Rushmore" of baseball artists, Andy Jurinko's name would certainly be on the short list of candidates. Noted for his strict attention to detail, Jurinko was both among the most prolific and popular baseball artists of the twentieth century. Most of his works, especially his larger pieces, celebrated ballparks and players of yore. As repeated in his The New York Times obituary, the artist once explained why he chose to focus on the time period 1946 to 1960: "I thought I'd like to pay homage to those guys who made $25,000 a year if they were lucky." Numerous books featuring Jurinko's painting have been published over the years and while most of his original artworks reside in private hands, dozens of his lithographs reside in the permanent collection of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
