Pair of original artworks, each produced by noted sports artist Bill Purdom, used, respectively, for the production of the 2003 Topps Gallery Baseball cards of Willie Mays (#1) and Ken Griffey Jr. (#17). The Willie Mays artwork has been signed in the lower right corner by Purdom. The Griffey artwork is not signed by Purdom but the text on the reverse of the issued card credits Purdom as the artist. Both artworks are accompanied by a COA from the Topps Vault.
Bill Purdom (1953-2016) was the most prolific artist in the history of the Topps Company, having created over 340 images for baseball, football, and basketball cards. His lithographs were featured as background art in several hit television shows, including Seinfeld, Arliss, and Everybody Loves Raymond. Today, lithographs of all seventy-five of Purdom's baseball paintings reside in the permanent collection of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Mays artwork measures 7.5x9.75" (visible dimensions), while the Griffey artwork measures 6.75x9.75". Both are in apparent Mint condition and have been matted and framed together with the corresponding 2003 Topps Gallery cards (apparent Mint condition) for each artwork. Total dimensions: 30x17".
