Presented is a government postcard signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Paul "Big Poison" Waner. He played in the Major Leagues from 1926-45, mainly for the Pittsburgh Pirates, for whom he played 15 seasons. Waner was 5'8", and he was known as "Big Poison." Paul's brother, Lloyd Waner, is also a Hall of Fame outfielder. He was 5'9" and also mainly played on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Llyod Waner was called "Little Poison." The government postcard measures 3.25x5.5". The card was postmarked from Louisiana in 1953. Part of the postmark is not stamped on the postcard, so the city of mailing and the exact date of the postmark are not on the postcard. The card was mailed to a recipient in Brooklyn, New York City. The origin of the Waner nicknames is believed to have come from a game at New York City's Polo Grounds when a fan with a thick New York accent and loud lungs attempted to yell "Big Person" and "Little Person" at the Waner brothers, and it sounded like "Big Poison" and "Little Poison." Paul Waner hit a lifetime .333 in playing for Brooklyn, the Boston Braves, and the New York Yankees in addition to the Pirates. He had 3,152 hits and won three NL batting crowns. Paul Waner signed the blank side of the postcard in beautifully flowing green ink. The card has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as "AUTHENTIC AUTO." The postcard exhibits some darkening and is in otherwise EXCELLENT condition.
