Mattingly was the face of the New York Yankees in the mid-1980s and early 1990s. He was the Yankees' captain from 1991 until his retirement in 1995. Mattingly was a six-time All-Star and won the AL MVP in 1985. His uniform number 23 has was retired by the Yankees in 1997.
