Displayed is a Babe Ruth multi-signed "Youth's Companion" baseball. The inaugural Hall of Famer's signature is on the sweet spot. It is unclear if Ruth used a black or blue fountain pen to sign the ball because his signature has been traced over, in blue or black by an unknown hand. The offered ball was sent to PSA, but PSA has a policy of declining to authenticate or grade any signature that has been traced over, so the signature has no PSA authentication or grade. Only Ruth's signature is on the sweet spot, but the ball has a number of other signatures on the side panels. The only legible signature, other than Ruth's, is from Ted Beard. He played in seven Major League seasons: Pittsburgh Pirates (1948-52), Chicago White Sox (1956-57). Beard, an outfielder, hit only .198 with six home runs in his Major League career; Babe Ruth and Beard have an unusual connection: They are both one of only ten players who have hit a baseball over the right field roof at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field. Beard did it in 1950, and Ruth hit his 714th and final Major League home run over the right field roof at Forbes Field. Stamped on the ball is "Horsehide Cover." The ball shows darkening, some stains, and parts where the "skin" of the ball has come off. Despite some imperfections, any Babe Ruth signed baseball will create interest in any sports collection.
