The 1899 Philadelphia Phillies had an outstanding regular season record of 94-58-2, yet the team finished in third place in the National League. The team batted .301, with three Hall of Famers batters leading the way: Outfielder Ed Delahanty led the NL with a .410 season batting average; great second baseman Nap Lajoie batted .378; outfielder Elmer Flick hit .342. The team had three twenty-game winners: Wiley Piatt (23), Red Donahue (21), and Chick Fraser (21). In civilian clothes is the team manager, Bill Shettsline. In addition to the aforementioned names, players in the photo included Orth, Chiles, Dolan, McFarland, Goeckel, Douglass, Cross, Thomas, Bernard, and Lauder. Machine-printed on the photo is "THE PHILLIES OF 1899/WHO/FINISHED THIRD WITH AN AVERAGE [winning percentage] OF .619." The photo's backing is light cardboard, and the offering measures 10.5x12.8". There is significant visible paper loss, a very small hole of approx. 0.75" and another hole, round and less than 0.25" (used to hang the photo), and tears and surface cracking on the edges. The photo is in overall fair condition. The players' high-topped spiked shoes, thick belts, high socks (without sanitary hose), small gloves, narrow bats and clean-shaven looks (no beards and only one mustache) combine to give terrific, visual detail to the team's late 19th Century appearance.
