Displayed is an intriguing, 1939, vintage broadside touting a Mon., Aug. 21st exhibition game in Cooperstown, New York, pitting the New York Yankees against the Bronx Bombers' top farm team, the Newark Bears. The exhibition game was played as part of Major League Baseball's Centennial. On June 12, 1939, all 11 living members of the Hall of Fame were part of the first actual induction ceremony for the newly constructed shrine. Regarding the fascinating broadside, it reads, in part: "Cooperstown/Mon., AUG. 21st/2:00 p.m. D.S.T./World's Champion N.Y. YANKEES vs. NEWARK BEARS/Last year's International League pennant winners/4200 Seats at 50c/3500 Seats at 75c/700 Seats at $1.00/101 Main St./Write or phone NOW for reservations/Cooperstown Baseball Centennial, Inc." The Yankees, managed by Hall of Fame manager Joe McCarthy, would go on to win another World's Championship in 1939. On the Yankees roster in 1939 were Hall of Famers: Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Joe Gordon, Lou Gehrig, Red Ruffing, and Lefty Gomez. Sadly, although unknown at the time, Gehrig was already suffering the effects of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and he only batted .143 in eight games early in the season before he voluntarily ended his then-all-time consecutive games streak at 2,130 and left the active roster, never to return. DiMaggio led the American League in batting in '39, hitting .381. Two years before the '39 season was the heyday of the 1937 Newark Bears, often considered the best minor league team of all time. Many famous New York Yankees, including Joe Gordon, Charlie Keller, Johnny Murphy, George Selkirk, and Babe Dahlgren (who replaced Gehrig on first base for the Yanks), played for the Newark Bears before reaching the Bronx Bombers. The offered broadside measures 13.8x16.4". The lower right corner is folded underneath. The broadside was trimmed, and it has darkened as a whole, showing some staining in spots. Despite the aforementioned imperfections, the broadside makes a great, vintage remembrance.
