Max Carey, born Maxmillian Carnarius, was a Hall of Famer who once held the National League lifetime steals mark with 738. Presented is a terrific 1914 Max Carey personal photo album, one that provides a behind-the-scenes look into the life and times of Carey. The speedy outfielder was in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1910-26) and the Brooklyn Robins (1926-29). He was a 10-time NL steals leader and a member of the 1925 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. He batted a career .285, with 70 home runs and 802 RBIs. Carey was the manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1932-33. The photo album has a typed title on a small paper square reading, "MAX CAREY HOME PHOTOS 1914." The 1914 date signifies when most of the included photos were first taken, although some of the photos in the photo album are from 1915. The actual Pioneer photo album containing the photos dates from 2000, and an unknown person has taken Max Carey's 1914 photos, and the inscriptions Carey wrote in black fountain ink on the back of each original photo, and placed the photos in the 2000 album, recreating Carey's inscriptions onto the album page so that Carey's notes on the back of each photo are now written next to each photo. The photo album measures approx. 10x14". It includes 66 pages for photos, with generally three photos per page. The photos typically measure approx. 3.2x5.8", although they vary slightly in exact size. Photos show mountains in Montana, farms in Idaho, Goat Island and seal rocks in San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate before the bridge, Carey playing baseball in Los Angeles, and orange groves in Southern California. The photos have a mix of fascinating scenery along with Carey, his wife and friends, persons from various areas of the world, and even a group shot that includes baseball icon Honus Wagner. It appears that Carey has signed a few of the photos in black fountain ink. Also, photos include those from the S.S. Manoa on a cruise to Hawaii, the Waikiki Beach Ball Team, a baseball game in Hawaii's Moiliili Park. Also, photos from a bullfight in Mexico, and some photos from the 1915 Pittsburgh Pirates, and in November of 1915 with a National League All-Star team, and many more. The photos are in generally good condition, although almost all of the photos have some foxing after more than a century. The photo album provides a terrific look at the United States culture just prior to the country's entrance into World War I.
