He was "the Bambino," and the amazing Babe Ruth threw left-handed from the outfield when he was hitting most of his 714 home runs, and left-handed from the mound, when as one of baseball's top pitchers he had a record of 94-46, with a 2.28 career ERA. But as a writer, the Babe was right-handed, with beautiful script. Presented is a 1946 Babe Ruth signed check that was sent to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, very close to where the Baltimore Orioles' Camden Yards Stadium is located today, Ruth was a mischievous child who was incorrigible, smoking and drinking before he was a teenager. He was sent to the nearby St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys in the hope that the school's strict discipline would help him. The key recreation at the school was baseball, and the young George Herman Ruth, on various school teams, usually played about 35-40 games a month from March through October. Ruth's mentor was the 6'6" Brother Mathias, who was a power hitter with a big swing, one that the Babe modeled. The teachers at St. Mary's, as was the widespread custom of the day, converted left-handed writers into students who wrote right-handed. Ruth developed wonderful right-handed penmanship, and it stuck with him for life.

The Ruth signed check measures 3x8.5". Machine printed on the check: "New York/The Chase Manhattan Bank/Of The City Of New York/SEVENTY-THIRD ST. BRANCH/BROADWAY AT 73rd ST./No. 112/Pay to the order of __________." The check's various blanks have been filled in by an unknown hand in dark blue or black fountain ink. The check is hand-dated as "June 11, 1946." It is made out to "U.S. Collector of Internal Revenue Service" in the amount of "$588.64/Five Hundred Eighty eight [sic] and 64/100." On the verso, an unknown hand has used blue fountain ink to write: "1946 Income Tax Installment due 6/13/46." The check has been cashed and on the verso is a "Treasurer of the United States stamp dated "August 8, 1946." Ruth has signed the check as "G H Ruth," using dark blue or black fountain ink and signing in his usual, beautifully scripted, big and bold signature. The check is in EXCELLENT condition. The signed check has been encapsulated and PSA Certified AUTHENTIC AUTO. Ruth would pass away in 1948, and in 1946, when he signed this check, he was living in an apartment on Riverside Drive in New York City, not far from the bank's branch address on the check. The Ruth signed check is a wonderful remembrance of a larger-than-life, one-of-a-kind immortal, considered by many to be baseball's G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time).
