Offered is the opportunity to possess a rare vintage 1935 Jack Wilson Boston Red Sox trunk. In the early 1930s, Wilson was a minor league infielder for three seasons and was discouraged about his lack of progress because of his hitting struggles. He returned to his home of Portland, Oregon, and played semi-professionally, as a pitcher because the team he joined needed a hurler. Although he was totally inexperienced and only threw a fastball, he was effective, and soon signed to play with the Pacific Coast League's Portland Beavers. He later signed with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics and pitched in only one game for them. Later, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox. He flourished there, with his best season being 1937, when he was 16-10 with a 3.70 ERA. He pitched for the Red Sox from 1935-41 and then briefly for both the Washington Senators and the Detroit Tigers in 1942 before arm troubles forced his retirement as a player. He finished his Major League career with a 68-72 record and a 4.59 ERA. The offered trunk is a terrific throwback item that evokes the days when trains were the main means of baseball transportation between cities. The trunk measures 23.5x27.75", and a length of 42.25". Stenciled onto the green trunk in white paint, is "JACK WILSON/BOSTON RED SOX." A metal tag on the trunk reads, "Union Made/PB Theatrical." A sticker, four inches in diameter, reads, "Angebilt Hotel/Orlando, Florida." A manufacturer's tag reads, "Priesmeyer Bros. Trunk/Saint Louis." There is an intact, heavy-duty 10" strap handle. The truck has metal clasps and an exterior lock, which is unlocked, but no key. Inside is the wardrobe side, which is locked. There are seven unlocked for storage, including a drawer for hats, with a hat ring. The trunk does exhibit good use, but it is in fine condition. It has expected scratch marks and some very minor instances of rust. Considering its age of at least approximately nine decades, the trunk is in nice condition.
