Displayed is a wonderful 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers original photograph of five Brooklyn Dodgers stars, taken by famed photographer Barney Stein. Each of the players in the photo was later immortalized in Roger Kahn's iconic book about the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers, "The Boys of Summer." The photo appears to have been taken in the Ebbets Field clubhouse. It includes Hall of Fame first baseman Gil Hodges (top row center), and Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella, to Hodges' left. To the right of Hodges is Brooklyn's great right fielder, Carl Furillo. Billy Cox, one of the best fielding third baseman in history, is on the left in the front row, and next to Cox is Don Newcombe, a star right-handed pitcher, and left-handed batter - one of the best hitting pitchers in history. In 1955, Newcombe, as a pitcher and frequent pinch-hitter, batted .357 with seven home runs and an incredible OPS of 1.024. Of course, Newcombe, who loved to hit, poses with a bat. Hodges was finally admitted, posthumously, into the Hall of Fame in 2023. Since he had more home runs than any right-handed batter in the NL during the 1950s, was a great fielder, and the manager of the 1969 "Miracle Mets," many baseball aficionados felt his Hall of Fame honors were long overdue. Campanella was kept in the Negro Leagues by baseball's color line until 1947, but he went on to win three NL MVP Awards. Furillo was a clutch hitter who won the 1954 NL batting crown and was a master of playing balls off the tricky right field wall at Ebbets Field. One of his nicknames was "The Reading Rifle" for his Pennsylvania hometown and the minor league team there for which he played and for his terrific arm. The 6.6x8.5" black and white photograph has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as TYPE I AUTHENTIC. The photo has some very light toning in the margins, but it is in overall very nice condition, and it shows these five Dodgers in a happy mood that just radiates from the photo and makes this a wonderful remembrance of the Brooklyn Boys of Summer.
