Displayed is a 1919, Pat Moran's Own Ball Game, a baseball board game using spinners and employing baseball strategy. Moran was a Major League catcher: Boston Beaneaters (1901-05), Chicago Cubs (1906-09), Philadelphia Phillies (1910-14). For most of his career, Moran was a second-stringer, batting a lifetime .235. He was good defensively and made a study of baseball strategy. He later became a Major League manager: Philadelphia Phillies (1915-18), Cincinnati Reds (1919-23). His '15 Phillies team won the NL pennant, and his '19 Cincinnati Reds won the World Series over the Chicago White Sox. This triumph was later marred when eight Chicago White Sox players were banned for life from baseball in 1920 for consorting with gamblers who fixed the 1919 World Series. The offered board game, made of heavy-duty cardboard and measuring 14x20.25", features a ballpark layout and eight spinners. The offering includes small paper numbers and numerous small wooden pieces that enable the players to keep track of runners and the score. A large page, approx. 8.4x13.25", has detailed playing instructions. The game strategy can be quite involved, with game players allowed to bunt, steal, hit and run, etc. We have seen the game board, although it is rare. This comes with the box of playing pieces, which are incredibly scarce. There are beautiful color graphics on the outside of the game board. The board shows some wear, but it is still very presentable. The instructions are complete, but it has folds from when it was folded into eighths, and some damage, including very small holes, very small tears, and stains, The cardboard box that the playing pieces come in is also completely intact but has some wear and staining. The amazing vintage game can still be played as all eight spinners are intact and working.
