Paul Brown, the legendary coach of the Cleveland Browns, came into his own as a coach of the famed Massillon Washington High School (in Ohio) in the 1930s. Presented is a 1938 Paul Brown signed yearbook, called The Massillonian, from Massillon Washington High School. Later, Brown was the head coach at Ohio University, the Cleveland Browns, and the Cincinnati Bengals, and he was the co-founder of both the Browns and the Bengals. Brown played high school football at Massillon and college football at Miami (of Ohio). He co-founded the Cleveland Browns and the team was named for him. With Brown as head coach, the Browns won the league championship of the AAFC (All-American Football Conference) in each of the four years of its existence (1946-49). When the Browns moved to the NFL in 1950, the team shocked many observers by winning the NFL Championship that season and again in 1954 and 1955. Brown was an amazing innovator who created the modern face mask, devised the draw play, and originated football's "taxi squad." Brown was also one of the modern era's leaders in having multiple African American players on his team; Marion Motley and Bill Glass, for example, in the late 1940s Cleveland Browns. He is a Pro Football Hall of Famer. On the cover of the 8.1x10.9", 100+ page yearbook is imprinted, "The 1938 Massillonian." Brown, using blue fountain ink, signed right below his yearbook picture as the coach of the football team. His signature is vintage to 1938 and is 8/10. The yearbook shows some nice wear, particularly along the spine, but it remains in overall nice condition. This is a very rare item and one of the earliest Paul Brown signatures that you will ever see.
