Displayed are circa 1948 Billy Southworth original artwork done for publication and an index card signed by Southworth. The right fielder played in the Major Leagues, for five teams: Cleveland Indians (1913 & 1915), Pittsburgh Pirates (1918-20), Boston Braves (1921-23), New York Giants (1924-26), St. Louis Cardinals (1926-27 & '29). A Hall of Famer, he batted a career .297, with 58 home runs and 138 steals. Southworth became a manager, sometimes while still playing, and he managed the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and two World's Championships, and he skippered the Boston Braves to another World Series triumph. The offered artwork, by artist Fred Reinert, measures approx. 12.25x12.5", framed to approx. 13.5x13.5". Using caricatures of Native Americans, the artwork features Southworth as the Braves' "Medicine Man" inspiring a generic Boston Braves player, appearing as a Native American stereotype, to chase after the National League pennant as the Brave says, "Medicine Man Billy make me team to beat." The artwork reads, "Billy, who won three pennants for the Cards in 1942 - '43 - '44, took over the Braves in 1946 -". The artwork also features a drawing of Southworth wearing a Boston Braves cap. Reinert has inscribed and signed the artwork: "Best Wishes to the Sage of Sunbury from Fred G. Reinert/1948." Reinert signed his artwork a second time, this time as merely "Reinert" at the bottom. Also, included is a vintage 3x5 index card, signed in 8/10 blue ink by Southworth. On the verso of the index card, written in pencil by an unknown hand, is: "Southworth Sr. deceased." The index card has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO. The artwork shows the slight darkening to be expected after more than 75 years, and the artwork and the signed index card are both in overall EXCELLENT condition.
