Presented is a circa 1910s Type I original Brown Brothers photograph of Hall of Fame right-hander Charles Albert "Chief" Bender. A Native American, Bender is mainly known for his stellar pitching for the Philadelphia Athletics (1903-14). He also played for the Baltimore Terrapins of the Federal League (1915), the Philadelphia Phillies, and he made a cameo appearance for the Chicago White Sox (1925). He has a lifetime record of 212-127, with a career 2.16 ERA. He was a 3-time World's Champion with the Athletics, and he pitched a no-hitter on May 12, 1910. He grew up on a reservation in Minnesota as a member of the Chippewa Tribe. He graduated from the Carlisle Indian School and attended Dickenson University. His nickname, "Chief" was a common moniker for Native Americans in his era. Bender also was a Major League coach, a minor league manager, a professional scout, and a Major League executive. During and after his playing career, he was known for his ability to detect opposing hurlers' pitches based on "tells" in their delivery. Sometimes taunted by fans or opposing players for his ancestry, Bender usually remained calm and sometimes laughed at the insults. Sometimes, after being taunted by opposing fans for his being a Native American, Bender, after pitching an impressive half-inning, would walk off the mound and respond to the heckling fans by responding, "Foreigners! Foreigners!" The 3.1x5.3" black & white photo has "Bender" hand-printed by an unknown hand, at the top. The photo is from the Brown Brothers (Photographers) Collection, with their stamp and player identification on the verso. The offering has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. The photo is in EXCELLENT condition.
