Robinson broke the modern Major League "Color Line" on April 15, 1947. He was an immediate sensation as he led the National League in stolen bases, batted .298, and was the National League Rookie of the Year. His greatest individual season was 1949 when he led the NL in batting average (.342) and was named the NL MVP. Mostly an infielder, Robinson batted a career .311, with all ten of his Major League seasons with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He helped Brooklyn to six pennants and the Brooklyn Dodgers' only World Championship, in 1955. Even before breaking the color line with the Dodgers, Robinson was a staunch civil rights advocate, and during his military service before he became a professional baseball player, he was unjustly court-martialed by the U.S. Army for his refusal to move to the back of a segregated Army bus.
