Presented is a 1950s Ed Walsh Artvue Hall of Fame Type 1 postcard. Walsh was born in Plains Township, Pennsylvania, in 1881, and he worked in Pennsylvania coal mines when he was a youth. In part, the small bio on the front of the 3.8x5.5" postcard reads, "Outstanding righthanded pitcher of Chicago A.L. from 1904 through 1916. Won 40 games in 1908 and twice pitched and won two games in one day, allowing only one run in doubleheader against Boston on Sept. 29, 1908. Walsh completed his Major League career with the White Sox in 1917." He is the last modern pitcher to win at least 40 games in a season, and his minuscule lifetime earned run average is 1.82, the lowest in MLB history. He is the last Major Leaguer to pitch more than 400 innings in a season (1908). He pitched a no-hitter on August 27, 1911. Walsh has a career record of 195-126. Injuries shortened his career, and he finished his MLB playing days with the 1917 Boston Braves. Walsh signed the postcard on the bottom front, using blue ink to sign as "Ed. A. Walsh." The unmailed postcard has no handwriting on back. The postcard shows some darkening, but it is otherwise in overall outstanding condition. The postcard has been encapsulated and has a PSA Certified auto grade as MINT 9.
