Presented is a December 2, 1909, The Sporting News Supplement M101-2 photo of Hall of Famer Tris Speaker. Known as "The Gray Eagle," the center fielder played 22 Major League seasons (1907-28), mostly for the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians. The Sporting News issued these supplement photos from 1909-13. They are categorized as M-cards in the Periodicals section of the American Card Catalog. Speaker's first season as a regular was with the Red Sox in 1909, when he batted .309 and had 35 steals. He batted .345 lifetime, and he was a 3-time World Champion. He was the AL MVP in 1912 when he batted .383. He was superb defensive player, and he was renowned for playing an extremely shallow center field. By playing so close to the infield, Speaker sometimes took throws from infielders for a force out at second base, and he utilized his close-in style to accumulate many assists on baserunners, as he led AL center fielders in assists seven times. He was also a Major League manager. The offered photo measures 7.8x9.9". It is matted and framed to 13.6x15.7". The supplement photo is mounted to the matte. It may be able to be removed by an expert restorer, but there is no guarantee. The top of the photo reads, "Supplement to The Sporting News St. Louis December 2, 1909." The bottom of the photo reads, "TRIS SPEAKER Boston American League." The photo's right edge has paper loss or small indentations in a number of spots, each measuring approx. a quarter to a half inch. Otherwise, the photo is in nice condition.
