Displayed is a 1950s Eddie Mathews 4x5" black & white Type I photograph by famed photographer William Jacobellis. Mathews was a Hall of Fame third baseman who played 17 seasons in the Major Leagues: Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (1952-66), Houston Astros (1967), Detroit Tigers (1967-68). He is the only player to have played for the Braves in each of the team's three home cities. Mathews batted a career .271, with 512 home runs, 2,315 hits, and 1,453 RBIs. He led the NL in home runs in both '53 and '59. In 1954, he was on the cover of the first-ever edition of Sports Illustrated. Ty Cobb once said of Mathews' sweet, left-handed swing, "I've only known three or four perfect swings in my life. This lad has one of them." The photo shows Mathews, in his Milwaukee Braves uniform, in his follow-through after a swing. The photo back has the William Jacobellis stamp, and written in ink by an unknown hand, "Ed Mathews at Polo Gds/Approx 1955." The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified: Photograph Cert. 1P15896. The photo, in excellent condition, comes with a PSA LOA.
