Enormous signature collection featuring only those individuals who played with or managed the New York Yankees between the years 1902 and 2004. A total of 203 different signatures are represented here, plus nine duplicates, for a total of 212 signatures, including seventeen different Hall of Famers. Also included is the signature of football Hall of Famer George Halas, who played with the Yankees in 1919. What makes this collection unique is that in addition to amassing the signatures of many star players, the original owner also sought out the signatures of many players who appeared in only one or several games with the team.
Many signatures are in the form of cuts, but also included are index cards, baseball cards, photos, magazine pages, and several miscellaneous items (all are flats measuring no more than 9x11"). The signatures, scripted in a variety of inks, average 8/10 and the items are in Excellent condition overall. Several are personalized. This grouping is part of a much larger autograph collection, the entirety of which is being offered in this auction. The collection was amassed over several decades mainly during the 1960s through the 1990s, with the autographs housed in albums, grouped by teams. The albums are more like scrapbooks in that each signature is paired with a biography sheet of the player, making for a unique historical timeline for each team. Both the Mantle and Maris signed items have been encapsulated by PSA, with the signatures certified as "Authentic." Given the number of signed items in this lot, one must allow for the possibility of clubhouse/secretarial signatures in the collection.
