This is certainly one of the most interesting items we have ever handled: Al Todd's personal scouting notebook from circa 1937. Catcher Al Todd played in the National League for eleven seasons (1932-43), but this notebook dates from his three-year stint (1936-38) with the Pittsburgh Pirates as noted by his handwritten notation on the front cover that reads "Hitters - all clubs - Al Todd - Please Return - Pirates-Pittsburgh pa." The "Spiral" notebook features lined pages bearing Todd's personal handwritten evaluations regarding the main hitters for each National League club, including many Hall of Famers. All seven opposing National League clubs are represented in the book, beginning with Brooklyn and ending with St. Louis. A total of sixty-eight player scouting reports are featured in the notebook, plus there are an additional three separate loose sheets (from a different notebook) consisting of an additional fourteen player entries. The notebook (4x7") displays moderate wear commensurate with its former use and remains in Very Good condition. The following are examples of entries for some of the Hall of Fame players listed in the notebook. 1) Ernie Lombardi: "Pitch low - fastballs - or on handles - slow up - good curve ball hitter. Play 3 base-s stop deep and straightaway." 2) Kiki Cuyler: "Slow up on 1st ball pitched - side arm - high ball hitter." 3) Billy Herman: "Side arm curves - away - hits and runs." 4) Gabby Hartnett: "Pitch fast balls on handles. slow up - great low ball hitter." 5) Mel Ott: "Side arm curve balls - not much on ball - fastball now and then - can throw fast ball high inside." 6) Bill Terry: "Fast balls low away. Play left field."
