Displayed is an original Nirvana poster touting the performance of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band at the New Music Seminar held at the iconic Roseland in New York City on July 23, 1993. Founded in 1917 in Philadelphia, Roseland changed its venue to New York City in 1919 to avoid the strict Philadelphia Blue Laws. Then, in 1952, the original New York City Roseland moved to 52nd Street from its NYC location on 51st Street. Over decades, Roseland featured dancing to big bands, such as the orchestras of Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. In more recent years, Roseland was a multi-purpose structure that could accommodate 3,500 persons. In 1993, Nirvana performed songs from In Utero, its then soon-to-be-released third studio album, a release that would top the album charts in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom. "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" were two singles from the album that would reach Number 1 on Billboard's Alternative Music chart. Jon Pareles, a New York Times music critic, wrote of Nirvana: "The band ... reminds both old fans and skeptics of why it blasted out of the club circuit to begin with. ...The music weaves and undulates, conveying not the muscular certainty of most hard rock, but a struggle to break free of despair." The poster's black & white photo includes band members: Kurt Cobain (guitar and lead vocals), Krist Novoselic (bass guitar), and Dave Grohl (drummer). Nirvana disbanded after the suicide of Kurt Cobain in 1994. As for Roseland, on April 7, 2014, Lady Gaga gave the final Roseland musical performance, and the venue closed after her concert. Representing a great example of the basic no-frills New York City poster style of its time, the poster measures 14x22". In simple, block type, black and green printing, it reads, "NIRVANA/ IN UTERO/JULY 23 - 1993/ROSELAND/NEW YORK CITY (40)." The poster does have some tiny white spots where the ink did not take in its printing run. Overall, the poster is in excellent condition. It recalls Nirvana, when the band was at its best.
