Presented is a May 24, 1883, Brooklyn Bridge opening ceremonies framed display. One page of the display measures 5.5x8" and apparently is the front page of a program for the bridge opening. It reads, "OPENING CEREMONIES of the NEW YORK and BROOKLYN BRIDGE/THURSDAY MAY 24th Commencing at 2 o'clock p.m. at the BROOKLYN APPROACH/Eagle Print." Another page of the display measures 6.3x8.9", and it is an invitation to the opening ceremonies for the bridge. It has a gorgeous, detailed image of the new bridge, with sailboats and steamships in the water nearby. This page reads, in part, "The Trustees of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge request the honor of the presence of Mr. J.B. Brehams at the Opening Ceremonies to take place on Thursday, May twenty-fourth at two o'clock P.M." The invitation then lists the members of the committee, the Mayors of both New York and Brooklyn, and the Roebling Engineering firm, the builders. At this time, New York and Brooklyn were separate cities, not combining into one New York City until Jan. 1, 1898, and it's interesting that at the time of the invitation, the bridge was not yet called the Brooklyn Bridge, but rather was called the New York Brooklyn Bridge. The entire display is framed at 16x19.9". Tucked into a flap on the back of the frame is a 6.5x9.25" envelope, possibly the original envelope for the invitation. The envelope has some small stains and a number of partial tears. The program page and the invitation page are in excellent condition, and together they make a fascinating, historical display.
