Presented is an extremely scarce autograph of Samuel Riddle, the owner of War Admiral, in 1937 the fourth winner of the American Triple Crown, on a gorgeous 8x10" black & white vintage photograph of War Admiral with jockey Charles Kurtsinger. Sired by Man o' War with the dam Brushup, War Admiral, at 15.2 or 15.3 hands was small compared to his sire's height of 16.3 hands. He also had a pugnacious temperament at the starting gate, delaying a number of races. He was named the 1937 Horse of the Year, and he is in the horse racing Hall of Fame. He acted up before the start of each of the three Triple Crown races yet won them all. He edged out Pompoon in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, and in the Belmont Stakes, he set an American record for 1 1/2 miles at 2:28 3/5, breaking Man o' War's track record by a fifth of a second. Sam Riddle both signed his name and inscribed the photo in black fountain ink. Before his own signature, Riddle signed as War Admiral, writing "From War Admiral and Sam Riddle." An unknown hand wrote in black ink, "'War Admiral'"/Kurtsinger up/Triple Crown Winner." On the lower left is "(c) S.S. COOK." The photo displays darkening from the passage of time and has a few tiny spots, but overall, the photo is in very good to excellent condition. The offering comes with a Beckett LOA.
