A jacket issued to members of the Brooklyn Dodgers NFL team during the 1939 season. The Dodgers football team moved from Dayton in 1930 and played their home games at Ebbets Field from 1930-43. The team would later be called the Brooklyn Tigers, then Brooklyn Yanks before leaving the NFL in 1946. The wool, half-zip jacket was worn by players on the sideline and is in outstanding condition with no rips or tears. The inside tagging shows that the jacket is a size 44 and was manufactured by O'Shea Knitting Mills. The left chest features the year, 1939, and that year's World's Fair logo. The hood, pocket trim, and hem are maroon in color. On the reverse side is a maroon and grey chenille football patch that reads, "FOLLOW THE DODGERS." The number 4 is sewn onto the left sleeve of the jacket indicating it belonged to Ralph Heikkinen, a rookie offensive guard on the team. Despite his smaller stature, Heikkinen had been a unanimous All-American at the University of Michigan in 1938. He would play one season for the Dodgers before leaving for the University of Virginia where he acted as the team's line coach and attended law school. He would later become a long-time lawyer for General Motors. Brooklyn Dodgers football memorabilia is incredibly rare and this is the first piece ever handled by Lelands. The item will include a Certificate of Authenticity from Heritage Auctions along with a team photo where most of the players are wearing this style jacket.
