Presented is a circa early 1960s dual-signed photograph of Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. "The M&M Boys" was their nickname, and the season when New York Yankees Mantle and Maris were in the forefront of the public consciousness was 1961. In that year, center fielder Mantle batted fourth in the batting order, his switch-hitting bat providing great protection for the Yankees' third hitter in the order, right fielder Maris. The Yankees won the American League pennant and the World Series, but the excitement that season was that both Mantle and Maris were challenging Babe Ruth's all-time Major League single-season home run record of 60 round-trippers. Hall of Famer Mantle developed an abscess infection and missed enough games to place him out of the homer race, but Maris did top Ruth on the final day of the regular season with his 61st homer against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Mantle had years of success and finished his career with 536 home runs, more than any other switch-hitter in history. Maris had a few very good years, but nothing ever came close to his magical run in '61, and illness and injury slowed his production in the later part of his career. During the 1961 run at Ruth's record, there were many stories in the press about a feud between Mantle and Maris. Unknown to most writers and fans is that, in order to get away from all the commotion caused by their chase of Ruth, the two shared a rented home in Queens, in New York City, and quietly laughed at all the rumors of their so-called feud. The offered dual-signed photo depicts the two sluggers on a field, possibly during spring training in Florida. Mantle has his fielder's glove on, unusual for photos as he is usually seen posing with a bat. It's a nice photo of the two, seemingly relaxed. Each player has signed the photo in fine tip blue Sharpie. Mantle signed with his usual, meticulously scripted signature, and Maris also shows fine penmanship as well in a big and bold autograph. On the back of the photo is "Maris/Roger & Mantle/Mickey & TI," written in blue ink by an unknown hand. The offering has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO.
