Mel Allen and Red Barber were the first two announcers inducted into the Broadcasters' Wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Presented is a Mel Allen size 7 1/8 "Mr. Disney" fedora. Allen was best known for his work over decades with the New York Yankees. Born as Melvin Allen Israel, Allen's rich baritone speech led to his nickname as simply "The Voice." Allen began broadcasting Yankees' games on the radio in 1940. He later announced the Yankees games on television as well. He became famous but was fired by the Yankees for never-explained reasons after the 1964 season. In later years, Allen returned to broadcast more Yankees games, often on a part-time basis. He also hosted This Week in Baseball on television. He announced one final Yankee game in 1995. Allen began balding in the 1950s, and as a result, he started to wear a hat on his broadcasts. "Mr. Disney" was a hat retailer in the Borough of Manhattan in New York City and has no connection to Disney Entertainment. Mr. Disney goes back to their first shop on Third Avenue in New York City in 1885, and Disney hats were still being sold into the 1970s. The offered hat is a gray, felt fedora. It is really a stylish hat that Allen must have loved, as he was a fancy dresser and real man-about-town in NYC. On the inside hatband, Allen's name is machine-stamped in gold lettering, and there is a size "7 1/8" tag. On the inside top is the "Mr. Disney" logo and the words, "Founded 1885 Mr. Disney New York." The hat has a few small spots on the right side but is in otherwise excellent condition. It's a great remembrance for a man whom Sports Illustrated called "The venerable Voice of Summer."
