Presented is a 1943 Earle Combs New York Yankees signed contract. A Hall of Fame center fielder, Combs was the leadoff man on the famed 1927 New York Yankees Murderer's Row, who played his entire Major League career with the Bronx Bombers (1924-35). He batted .325 lifetime, with 58 home runs. Combs was involved in a serious on-field accident when he ran into an outfield wall in 1924 at Sportsman's Park, in St. Louis, fractured his skull, broke his shoulder, and damaged his knee. He was never the same player after that incident, and he retired after the 1935 season and became a Yankees coach from 1936-44. His main duty upon first becoming a Yankees coach was to groom his successor, Joe DiMaggio, on the nuances of center field play. The signed contract is on four pages of 8.5x11" paper that was folded into six parts for mailing. The fold lines remain. The Uniform Employe's (sic) contract has a typed salary of $5,000. A stamped date shows the signing taking place on March 31, 1943. The contract was signed by New York Yankees owner Ed Barrow, in dark blue or black fountain ink. Combs signed the contract in neat, bold blue fountain ink. The contract is also signed by American League President Will Harridge, in beautiful script using blue fountain ink. On the top of the first (cover) page, an unknown hand has written "Combs 1943" in blue fountain ink. Considering the more than eight-decade age of the signed contract, the document is in excellent condition. The contract comes with a PSA LOA.
