Presented is a collection of 1920s-30s payroll checks from the Baltimore Orioles, at the time a baseball team in the minor league International League. All of the payroll checks are encapsulated by PSA, and PSA Certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO for Charles Knapp and/or John Ogden, Orioles officials who were the signers of each of the checks. The checks measure approx. 3x8.5". At that time, the Baltimore Orioles were a AA-level minor league team, and AA was then the designation of the highest minor league baseball. The heading on each check reads, Baltimore Baseball & Exhibition Co., and the checks were written on the National Marine Bank/Baltimore, MD. A number of the checks were written for transportation from the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. Some of the checks were written as bi-monthly payroll checks to players on the Orioles: to Louis Koupal, who only received a check for $209.00 instead of $400.00 because of a winter advance from the club; to Jack Hopkins, who received $ $264.86 out of $266.67 because of a deduction of $1.81 for "extras." Koupal spent time in the Major Leagues as did John Gill, an outfielder whose payroll check is included. The checks show aging. There are some stains, foxing, and tears. Many of the checks have paper loss and stains from aging and resulting oxidation. Despite imperfections, the collection of checks gives an inside look at the financial payments of a vintage minor league franchise.
