Displayed is a late 1960s game worn Washington Senators' batting helmet. The Washington Senators started play in the American League in 1901. The franchise changed its team name to the Nationals in 1905, and the franchise changed the team's nickname back to the Senators from 1957-60. Then in 1961, the team moved to Minnesota to become the Minnesota Twins. An expansion franchise debuted that same season as the new Washington Senators, and they played in Washington through the 1971 season before becoming the Texas Rangers. The offered helmet was most likely worn by either Don Lock or Cap Peterson, both outfielders. The helmet has a white, hand-written number 4 on the bill, and both Lock and Peterson wore number 4 in the late 1960s for the Washington Senators. Lock played eight Major League seasons, and he was with Washington from 1962 to 1966. He batted a career .238, with 122 home runs. In '66, his last year as a Senator, he batted .233, with 16 home runs. Cap Peterson played in the Major Leagues for seven seasons, and he was with Washington in 1967-68. In his two seasons with the Senators, he batted a combined .227, with a total of 11 home runs. The dark blue helmet has a W on the front, as a red decal with white trim. Handwritten on the interior top of the head padding, by an unknown hand, in black marker, is "7 1/4" for size. The helmet had a split of slightly more than an inch, on the left front of the bill. The split had been partially repaired, most likely not by the Senators but by whoever owned the helmet after it became cracked. The batting helmet exhibits extensive wear. The back hatband is split. There are many scrapes, some small paint loss in various spots, and abrasions. In 2023, this same franchise won its first World Championship as the Texas Rangers finally won a World Series. The offered vintage helmet goes back to the days when the Washington Senators were usually firmly in the American League's second division.
