Original glass plate negative of Babe Ruth taken by renowned baseball photographer Charles Conlon. This is one of the finest Ruth images we have ever handled and it is made all the more significant by its year of production: 1927. The image pictures Ruth in uniform at Yankee Stadium as he poses on the steps of the dugout. Ruth's forlorn expression, with his eyes gazing directly into the camera, creates a haunting image of the fabled slugger at the pinnacle of his career. Ruth's name and team affiliation, "Babe Ruth (Yanks)," is written in Conlon's hand along the top border of the negative, as is the year, "27." The negative is housed in its original paper sleeve which also bears Conlon's handwritten notations in black ink on the front: "Babe Ruth/Yankees/Head." Negatives, unlike photos, of which there can be countless Type I examples, are unique. There is only one, and it was in the camera on the field with the photographer and his subject. Conlon was based in New York, so he had ample opportunity to capture Ruth on film, but few images can compare with the offered example. The negative (4x5") displays a few light scratches and is in Very Good condition overall.
